Making Money Online - Tip #3: Commenting & Feedback

This one is another no-brainer tip for anyone running a blog or website that has commenting system.  If a reader spends the time and energy to write a comment, whether positive or negative, you owe him or her a response.  This mentality will not only keep your reader engaged, it will make you appear more human in their minds.  There are millions of websites around the world, but only a portion of these sites allow you to “talk” to them (their authors) and get feedback in return.

It is your responsibility as a blogger to make your readers feel like they are part of your website and they are valuable because in the end, it is your readership that will help you make your site profitable.  Treat your readers with respect and try to be as thorough as you can with your response.  It makes a favorable impression to see an author spend more than a couple of minutes contemplating and writing a thoughtful response.  On the other hand, a simple ‘Thank you’ is more than enough in a lot of cases as well.  It is your job to decide on how you approach your readers, however keep in mind that there is a real person on the other side.

How do you deal with negative comments?

For readers that express anger or negativity in your comments, still take the time out to reply to them.  Starting a flame war may not be ideal, however, so try to deal with them as politely as possible.  Unless you’re a badass like Maddox, you probably can’t get away with being rude and arrogant.  Remember: your goal is to keep your existing readership and grow if at all possible.  You want to have mass appeal, so if you’re going to base your attitude on another person’s character, pick a persona that is likable.

Just like how lots of posts produces more content for search engines to crawl through, commenting will help build readership by keeping visitors interested well after your content ends.

If you disagree with any of my opinions and arguments, feel free to post a comment. =)
